Request a Vacant Property Check
Van Buren County residents can request property checks if they will be away from their homes, businesses, or other facilities for a while. Deputies will check the exterior to help prevent burglaries while you’re gone.
What We Check
During the check, deputies will look for:
- Secure windows and doors
- Safety concerns
- Property damage
- Signs of vandalism or intruders
If we find any issues, we’ll notify you or your emergency contact and decide on the best response.
Important Information
- This service is only for unoccupied properties.
- If the property is occupied, please fill out the Extra Patrol Form.
- Submit your security check request at least ten days before you leave to ensure proper scheduling.
- If your plans change and you return early, call the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office at 269-657-2006 to cancel the checks.
Before You Leave
Consider these steps before your trip:
- Lock all doors and windows. Use dowel rods for sliding doors and windows.
- Leave some lights on or use timers to deter criminals.
- Provide a key to an emergency contact.
- Cancel services like housekeepers. List anyone who may access your property on the Property Check Form.
- Bring in trash containers from the curb.
