Dog License Information

In Michigan, all dogs over 4 months old must have a current rabies vaccination and a dog license. You need to get a dog license by March 1 or when your puppy gets its first rabies shot, usually at 4 months old.

Van Buren County offers 1-year and 3-year dog licenses. To buy a license, your dog must have a valid rabies vaccination. Here’s what “current” means:

  • For a 1-year license, the vaccination must have at least 30 days remaining.
  • For a 3-year license, the vaccination must expire after April 1 of the license’s final year.
