Welcome to the Van Buren County Public Defender’s Office! 

Our mission is to protect the constitutional rights of people accused of crimes who cannot afford to hire an attorney. We serve our clients as advocates, defend individual freedom, and advocate for community power by ensuring the rights and liberties of all are protected and respected by our court system. 

Our team of attorneys are dedicated to fearlessly defending our clients, serving as a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, and safeguarding constitutional rights within the justice system. We strive for the best outcomes for our clients while demonstrating compassion, integrity, and a focus on support beyond just the criminal case.

Holistic Defense Approach

The Van Buren County Public Defender’s Office emphasizes client-centered representation, understanding our clients’ needs and goals, not just their charges. Our holistic defense approach allows us to provide support that extends beyond the immediate criminal case, helping our clients achieve long-term success. Our team includes a full time Social Worker, Investigator, and Legal Specialists to address both legal and social needs, enabling attorneys to advocate for each person’s unique situation.

Indigency Screenings in Van Buren County

Our office screens individuals to evaluate whether they are eligible for representation. Adults in custody automatically qualify for an attorney. Our attorneys conduct daily jail interviews at 9:00 AM. 

Adults who are not in custody must apply for a public defender to determine if they meet the eligibility criteria. Please apply at least three days before your court date. You can apply in the following ways:

• Online: Complete the Application for Public Defender.
• In-person: Forms are available in each courtroom.
• Phone: Call the Public Defender’s Office and ask to be screened.
