Our Canine Unit
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office proudly operates a Canine Unit with four K-9 Deputies. Each deputy partners with a highly trained dog. These teams are part of our Patrol Division, working around the clock to respond to calls and assist wherever needed.
About Our Canines
Our dogs are trained for various tasks, including detecting drugs, bombs, and weapons, as well as conducting cadaver searches. German Shepherds are commonly used, but Belgian Malinois are becoming popular for their size and work ethic.
These loyal and dedicated dogs are vital members of the police force. Whether searching for missing children or investigating suspicious items, they uphold a proud tradition of service that spans thousands of years.
K-9 officers undergo rigorous training, often starting soon after birth. They work closely with their human handlers, living with the officer’s family to build trust and ensure they remain friendly and sociable.
K-9 Officers
K-9 officers are considered full police officers. Laws protect them just like human officers, with severe penalties for assault or harm. In some cases, human officers may use force to protect a K-9 partner. When a K-9 officer falls in the line of duty, they receive a full police funeral.
Their ballistic vests and badges are not just for show; they symbolize the respect and necessity of these remarkable dogs in our force.
