Victim Services Unit

The Van Buren County Victim Services Unit (VSU) is a group of trained volunteers working with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan Sheriff’s Association. Coordinated by Tara Bugg and Neva Carey, they support victims, survivors, and their families during crises. They work alongside police, fire, and medical personnel to provide compassionate care.

How We Help

The Victim Services Unit ensures that victims are not left alone or ignored, allowing authorities to focus on their duties. We offer immediate comfort and short-term crisis intervention to prevent further distress. Our team provides guidance on what to expect next, funeral arrangements, medical exams, and the legal process. We also connect victims with community resources.

At the scene, we support victims and witnesses, helping them cope with the initial shock. We maintain communication with officers to address any questions or concerns. We also help build a support network of friends, family, or community members.
