Jurisdiction

The 7th District Court in Van Buren County handles the following cases:

  • Adult criminal misdemeanors (up to one year imprisonment)
  • Civil infractions and traffic violations
  • Civil suits ($25,000 or less)
  • Land contract forfeitures
  • Landlord-tenant disputes (evictions)
  • Small Claims (up to $5,500)

All adult criminal cases start here. The court has four divisions: Traffic, Criminal, Civil, and Probation. It can:

  • Conduct misdemeanor and felony arraignments
  • Issue arrest and search warrants
  • Preside over preliminary examinations for felonies
  • Set bail and accept bond

Magistrate

A District Court Judge may appoint a Magistrate to help with duties like arraignments, accepting guilty pleas, and sentencing for certain violations. The Magistrate can also set bail, issue warrants, perform marriages, and hear small claims cases.

No Weapons Allowed

The 7th District Court is a weapons-free zone. Do not bring weapons to court, even with a permit. You may be searched for weapons.

Probation Services

To pay Probation Fines and Costs, visit the Payment Information page. You’ll need a Pay Location Code, case number, and a debit/credit card. Payments can also be made by phone, mail, or in person.

Pre-Sentence Investigation Report (PSI)

A PSI report includes the probation officer’s evaluation, offense details, criminal history, and sentencing recommendation. Victims can share how the crime affected them. The report follows guidelines to ensure fair and consistent recommendations.

Probation Early Discharge Eligibility

If you meet all terms and complete at least half of your probation, you may qualify for early discharge. See the Probation Notice of Early Discharge (PDF) for details.
