About Us
The Bangor/South Haven Heritage Water Trail Association (B/SH HWTA) is a volunteer group dedicated to maintaining a 21-mile canoe and kayak trail along the South Branch of the Black River between Bangor and South Haven in Van Buren County, Michigan.
Our Mission
We aim to protect and showcase the scenic beauty and heritage of the Black River between Bangor and South Haven.
Trail Information
The water trail is still under development. We have organized workdays to clear pathways through logjams. You can volunteer for trimming days or join our paddle events. We’d love to see you on the river!
Please note: Some trail sections are undeveloped, with many obstructions and portages. The area from County Road 687 to CR 380 is particularly challenging and not recommended for family paddling.
Once completed, signs will educate users about local history and the environment. The trail will offer unique ways to enjoy nature and history while promoting environmental awareness, tourism, and economic growth.
Rentals
B/SH HWTA does not rent canoes or kayaks. Please contact the South Haven Chamber of Commerce or the South Haven Visitors Bureau for rental services.
