Welcome to the Bangor/South Haven Heritage Water Trail Association (B/SH HWTA). We are excited to share our vision and goals with you. These guide our efforts to enhance the Heritage Water Trail experience for everyone.
Our Goals
- Plan and develop a heritage water trail system on the Black River.
- Explore the history of the Black River and its tributaries in Van Buren County, Michigan.
- Install historical markers on bridge crossings over the Black River between Bangor and South Haven.
- Create an interpretive guide for the Black River Heritage Water Trail linked to trail markers.
- Build an interactive website to help users find trail details, including distance and accessibility.
- Study how the Heritage Water Trail impacts local and regional economic development.
- Ensure private property rights along the trail are respected.
- Conduct activities to support our mission and goals.
- Secure necessary funding to achieve our goals and mission.
- Develop a code of ethics for trail users.
Our Vision
- Provide stewardship to develop and maintain the Heritage Water Trail as a treasured natural resource.
- Offer opportunities for people to enjoy scenic beauty and learn about the environment and history.
- Create economic development opportunities through the establishment of the Heritage Water Trail.
