What is Drug Treatment Court?

The Drug Treatment Court helps rebuild lives by offering treatment for substance abuse to non-violent offenders. This approach makes our community safer and saves money compared to costly incarceration.

Founded in 2008 by the Honorable William C. Buhl (retired), the Van Buren County Drug Treatment Court has successfully reduced addiction and crime. This program offers a more effective and affordable solution than traditional methods.

Arrest records show that our community faces substance-related crimes involving alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamine. The Drug Treatment Court is dedicated to enhancing community safety and improving family relationships by reducing addiction-related crime.

Through collaboration with the Court, Prosecutor’s Office, Defense Bar Association, Sheriff’s Department, Health Department, Community Mental Health, Department of Corrections, and Department of Human Services, this program provides a vital resource to break the cycle of addiction.

Who is eligible for Drug Treatment Court?

  • Residents of Van Buren County or nearby counties who work full-time in Van Buren County.
  • Individuals that are charged with a felony and must meet high-risk high-need target population.
  • Non-violent offenders.
  • U.S. Citizens or qualified aliens.
  • Individuals with a clinical SUD diagnosis.

What is the structure of Drug Treatment Court?

The program is a minimum of 15 months comprised of 5 phases.

How do I get started?

The program is voluntary and begins after conviction. Participants must plead guilty and agree to the program’s treatment plan.

Attorneys or potential participants should complete an application screening form and submit it to the prosecutor’s office. If approved, the Case Manager will arrange an interview.
