Sobriety Court
What is Sobriety Court?
Sobriety Court offers specialized treatment and supervision for those charged with operating while intoxicated (OWI). This program addresses the specific needs of these offenders.
Who is Eligible for Sobriety Court?
- Residents of Van Buren County or nearby counties who work full-time in Van Buren County.
- Charged with a misdemeanor or felony OWI 2nd or 3rd offense. Those pleading guilty to an OWI 1st with special circumstances may also qualify.
- Non-violent offenders.
- U.S. Citizens or qualified aliens.
- Individuals with a clinical diagnosis of substance abuse or dependency, must meet high-risk high-need target population.
What is the structure of Sobriety Court?
The program is a minimum of 12 months for misdemeanor offences, and a minimum of 15 months for felony offenses, both comprised of 5 phases.
Why participate in Sobriety Court?
- Access to effective substance abuse treatment.
- Eligibility for a restricted driver’s license.
How do I get started?
The program is voluntary and begins after conviction. Participants must plead guilty and agree to the program’s treatment plan.
Attorneys or potential participants should complete an application screening form and submit it to the prosecutor’s office. If approved, the Case Manager will arrange an interview.
