SHERIFF NEWS RELEASE – New K-9 Charlie

Van Buren County  Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New K-9  

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the addition of its newest K-9 team member “ Charlie” ,  who will be partnered with Deputy Cody Bingaman.  The new K-9 unit will enhance the Sheriff’s Office’s capabilities in community safety, criminal investigations, and emergency response.

K-9 Charlie is a 1 ½ year old German Shepard from Poland , specially trained in narcotics detection, tracking, apprehension, article searches . The team recently completed an intensive training program at FM K9 in Berrien Center Michigan , where they demonstrated exceptional performance and received certification thru the International Police Work Dog Association.

Lieutenant Tony Evans,  who oversees the K9 Units for the Sheriff’s Office , advises “ Deputy Cody Bingaman was selected as the new K9 handler after an extensive selection process was conducted and with the addition of K9 Charlie the Sheriff’s Office will now have three canines serving the community “.        

Sheriff Daniel Abbott states,
We are thrilled to welcome K-9 Charlie to our agency. This K-9 will play a critical role in keeping our community safe, supporting our deputies, and strengthening our emergency response capabilities. We are confident that Deputy Bingaman and K-9 Charlie will make an outstanding team.

The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit is a vital component of local law enforcement efforts, assisting in high-risk operations, search-and-rescue missions, and proactive community engagement. K-9 Charlie will also be present at upcoming community events and demonstrations, helping build positive relationships between law enforcement and the public.
