Van Buren County Swift & Sure Sanctions Probation Program (SSSPP)
*Effective January 1, 2026, we are no longer enrolling new cases into the Swift and Sure Sanctions Probation Program.
Program Overview
The Van Buren County SSSPP offers intensive supervision for high-risk felony probationers. Our goal is to ensure compliance with probation terms through swift and consistent sanctions for any violations. We aim to reduce repeat offenses and enhance public safety. The program lasts at least one year, but the Judge can extend it if needed.
This program is a joint effort with community partners, including:
- 36th Circuit Court
- Van Buren County Prosecuting Attorney
- Defense Bar President
- Van Buren County Sheriff
- MDOC Supervisor
- Community Mental Health SUD Director
- Community Mental Health Director
Who Can Join?
We focus on offenders who:
- Have a medium or high COMPAS assessment score
- Are not charged with an ineligible offense under MCL 771A.6(3)
How Participants Are Chosen
The program has two tracks: probation violation and sentenced.
Probation Violation Track: Participants are identified by their MDOC Agent, who completes a Referral and Screening Eligibility Form. The Judge decides on admission during the probation violation hearing.
Sentenced Track: MDOC identifies eligible participants during the Pre-Sentence Investigation. The Judge makes the final decision at sentencing. The Prosecuting Attorney can veto if admission is a downward departure from sentencing guidelines.
