Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Rescues Nine Boaters During Severe Lake Michigan Thunderstorm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

South Haven, Mich. — At approximately 3:30 p.m, July 3rd, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Division responded to a report of a vessel in distress near North Beach in the 400 block of North Shore Drive in South Haven.

At the time of the emergency, an Extreme Thunderstorm Warning was in effect over the area, producing torrential rain, powerful winds, dangerous lightning, and large waves on Lake Michigan. Despite the rapidly deteriorating conditions and significant hazards to both rescuers and those in distress, Marine Patrol deputies immediately launched a response to assist the disabled vessel.

Upon arrival, deputies found that the boat had suffered a complete loss of power and all motor controls, leaving it unable to maneuver in the hazardous conditions as it drifted near the shoreline.

Working in extremely challenging weather, deputies safely reached the vessel and successfully rescued all nine occupants. The passengers were transported to South Side Marina, where they were evaluated by South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) EMS personnel. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

After the passengers were safely ashore, the disabled vessel was secured and later towed away from the shoreline.

The rescue operation was conducted through the coordinated efforts of the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Division and the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, whose assistance was instrumental in ensuring the safe outcome of the incident.

“This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly weather conditions can change on Lake Michigan,” said Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott. “Our Marine Patrol deputies willingly entered extremely dangerous conditions marked by violent winds, heavy rain, lightning, and high waves to protect lives. Their professionalism, training, and commitment—along with the outstanding cooperation from the Allegan County Marine Patrol and SHAES EMS—resulted in the safe rescue of all nine passengers.”

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office reminds all boaters to closely monitor marine weather forecasts before heading onto the water and to immediately seek safe harbor when severe weather is approaching. Conditions on Lake Michigan can deteriorate rapidly, creating life-threatening situations within minutes.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and South Haven Area Emergency Services for their partnership and assistance during today’s successful rescue operation.
