From the Desk of Sheriff Abbott – 7/17/2026

  • We Contracted with Porter Township for a Deputy to be there 5 hours a week. The Deputy will focus on blight and other issues that need attention in the township. We have several contracts in the county with townships, and we’ve had great success with everyone that has one.
  • Dispatch took 9,291 phone calls in June, bringing their total for the year to 48,409. Uniform Response had 406 traffic stops in June, bringing their total for the year to 2,220. Uniform Response took 791 calls in June, bringing their total for the year to 4,485.
  • Uniform Response handled a Larceny of a Trailer in Hartford Township. The suspect/suspects stole a black, BNM manufacturer, 2022 (year it was made), vin: 7H5UB141XNE000545, plate was E678464, 6×12 foot trailer with a drop-down gate that was parked at a residence. The trailer has fire damage on the front part of the wood deck. Anyone with any information is asked to call our office.
  • Dispatch received numerous calls about an Erratic Driver. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle by Armstrong Corners, observe the poor driving, and make a traffic stop on it. The driver was found to be under the influence of drugs. They were arrested for the incident. I cannot thank everyone enough who called this in and bringing it to our attention so the stop could be made. The calls potentially saved a serious crash or someone from losing their life.
  • Uniform Response was called to a Suspicious Vehicle in the Middle of the Roadway in Hartford Township. Upon arrival, the driver wouldn’t open the door and was not cooperating with the Deputy at all. I happened to be close to it and was on scene right after the Deputy. It was obvious upon contact the driver was under influence and was trying to get the car started to flee. We ended up boxing in his vehicle immediately so he couldn’t flee the scene. The suspect continued to be uncooperative, grabbing a pipe to assault us if we entered his vehicle or if he exited it. We ended up having to break out a couple of windows and physically remove him as he continued to resist. The individual continued to be uncooperative, and it was obvious that he was under the influence of drugs. Once medical personnel cleared him at the scene, he was transported to the hospital for a blood draw. The driver was lodged for operating under the influence of drugs, driving while suspended, and resisting and obstructing.
  • Uniform Response went to a residence in Gobles to arrest a Wanted Individual. When the Deputy was approaching the residence in the yard, he was attacked by a dog. The dog wasn’t provoked or sent by the owner. The wanted individual was located and fought with Deputies. She now faces more charges for fighting with Deputies. The Deputy that was bit went to the ER for treatment and was able to go back to work for the rest of his shift after the dog bite was treated.
  • Uniform Response handled a PIA (Personal Injury Accident) in Arlington Township. Upon investigation, it appears that a truck missed a stop sign, hence, driving out in front of an oncoming semi. A T-Bone type collision occurred. The semi driver had minor injuries, but the truck driver had life threatening injuries and was transported to the ER. Unfortunately, the truck driver succumbed to his injuries later that same day losing his life.
  • The Van Buren County Youth Fair kicks off this next week. As always, we are hoping for a great turnout supporting our youth in the county.
