From the Desk of Sheriff Abbott – 6/18/2026

  • Uniform Response handled a Fatal Fire incident with the Paw Paw Fire Department. Both offices were dispatched to a fully engulfed residential fire in Waverly Township in the early morning hours. After the fire was out, firefighters did locate the homeowner/victim inside. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall was called to investigate the preliminary cause of the fire. It appears that a tree branch fell onto an electrical line, which caused the fire. Thank you to all the other departments that assisted with this as well.
  • Our Narcotic Detectives were in the City of Hartford when they spotted a Wanted Fugitive on a Bike they were familiar with. They drove up by him, identified themselves, and advised him to stop as he had a warrant for his arrest. They attempted to get him to stop several times verbally, but he wouldn’t comply and fled on his bike prior to jumping off it to run on foot. Detectives bailed out and ran him down, putting him in custody. After he was in custody and prior to transport, methamphetamine was found on him. He now faces more charges.
  • Uniform Response handled a Larceny in Bloomingdale Township. Unknown suspects entered an abandoned barn through the roof and stole copper wire out of it. Anyone with any information on this is asked to call our office.
  • Uniform Response handled a Domestic Violence incident in Antwerp Township. The investigation found that an assault took place and that the suspect violated bond conditions as well. The suspect was lodged for the incident.
  • Uniform Response Recovered a Stolen Vehicle in Antwerp Township. The contracted Deputy was following up on blight when he found the stolen vehicle which Hartford PD took the complaint on. One individual at the residence had two warrants, they were for dangerous drugs and parole violation. She was arrested on the warrants. The Deputy also was able to get a confession on taking the vehicle, so the individual now will face those charges. The vehicle owner was contacted, and the vehicle was being picked up by them.
  • Dispatch received a Call from a Concerned Citizen about a Possible Drunk Driver on the Roadway. Deputies located the vehicle, observed the poor driving, and made a stop on it in Columbia Township. The driver was intoxicated and arrested for the incident. A huge shout out to the individual that called this in. By calling it in, we were able to get the vehicle stopped before a traffic crash could have happened.
  • Our Weekend Work Crew Assisted Paw Paw Lawton Mason Lodge Number 25 this past weekend. The lodge is working on a project to restore, clean, and repair older markers at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Prior to doing the work, everyone who participated was taught how to clean, repair, and restore the markers the proper way as to not destroy them.
  • Uniform Response was Extremely Busy Dealing with Gingerman Raceways Gridlife Event they hold Every Year. It started out Friday with traffic backed up for miles due to the attendees not being able to get in the night before as the gates stayed closed. We had to call in Deputy’s early to take care of the problem. Saturday night, Deputies were being called there over and over. Several people went to jail with charges ranging from disorderly, operating under the influence of alcohol (hitting parked cars), terroristic threats, resisting and obstructing, possession of ketamine, and domestic violence. Once again, it’s individuals coming to our community with criminal behavior that we must deal with and tying up our local resources on them.
