Sixth Amendment
The Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. It ensures the accused are informed of charges, can confront witnesses, and have legal assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How did Van Buren County Court get my name?
We receive a list of residents with driver’s licenses or state IDs from the Secretary of State. Names are randomly selected for jury duty.
What if I’ve moved out of the county?
If you no longer live in Van Buren County, provide your new address and proof of residency to be removed from our list.
What if I’m over 70 years old?
If you are over 70, you can choose not to serve. Mark “yes” on question 8 of your questionnaire and return it.
What if I have changed my name or address?
Update your information on the back of your questionnaire or email us.
What if the recipient is away at college?
Fill out the form and include the dates they will be home. We can reschedule their service.
What if I have a medical issue or disability?
If you have a medical issue, send us a doctor’s note, and we will excuse you from service.
What if my job is too demanding?
Jury duty is a legal obligation. Employers cannot penalize you for serving. See Michigan law 600.1348 for details.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable clothes, but avoid t-shirts, shorts, or inappropriate clothing. Bring snacks, water, and reading materials. Electronics must be off in court.
How long do trials last?
Your service term is two weeks. Trials usually last one day in District Court and three days in Circuit Court.
Are there breaks during the day?
Yes, there are breaks mid-morning, lunch, and afternoon.
What if I don’t have transportation?
Arrange rides with friends, family, or Van Buren Public Transit.
How much are jurors paid?
Jurors receive $30 for the first full day, $45 for subsequent days, and mileage compensation. Payment is sent three weeks after your term.
