Medical Support

Our Friend of the Court offers medical packets upon request. These packets give you a basic understanding of your rights and responsibilities for medical child support. For specific questions, please contact the Friend of the Court office.

  • If you have insurance for your children, share your current insurance details with the Friend of the Court Office and the other parent.
  • Exchange insurance information directly with the other parent. The Friend of the Court Office does not mediate this exchange.
  • If your health insurance changes, notify the Friend of the Court Office and the other parent in writing.
  • Most court orders require both parents to maintain or obtain health coverage if available at a reasonable cost through employment or as an optional dependent coverage.
  • If neither parent can provide health insurance at a reasonable cost, you are not required to purchase it. However, uninsured health care costs will be divided according to the court’s medical percentage split. You may receive updates requesting insurance information.

Health Care Enforcement

Enforcing health care expenses is part of child support obligations. The medical percentage split depends on each parent’s income relative to their combined income. You can find this percentage in your Uniform Child Support Order.

Parents should discuss health care procedures and costs for their child. Keep each other informed about doctor appointments and medications. Ideally, both parents should collaborate on medical decisions. The physical custodial parent usually handles routine medical care, and the Friend of the Court respects those decisions.
