NATURE OF INCIDENT: Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Honors Citizen for Heroic Actions

NARRATIVE:

On March 24, 2026, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office formally recognized Mr. Ricky Holly for his courageous and selfless actions during a residential structure fire that occurred on February 28, 2026, in Pinegrove Township.
Mr. Holly was presented with a Letter of Commendation during the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners meeting by Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott and Undersheriff Casey Davis. The recognition highlighted Mr. Holly’s extraordinary bravery and quick response to a life-threatening emergency.
On the morning of February 28, 2026, Mr. Holly observed heavy smoke coming from a residence located in the eleven thousand block of County Road 653 while traveling past the home with another citizen. Realizing the potential danger and believing the residence may be occupied, he immediately stopped to assist.
Without regard for his own safety, Mr. Holly entered the smoke-filled residence in an effort to locate and help any occupants. While inside, he opened doors to allow several animals to escape and conducted a search of the home. During his search, he located an adult female who was unable to exit the residence due to physical limitations.
Despite hazardous conditions, Mr. Holly successfully assisted the woman out of the home and to safety prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. His actions also contributed to the safe escape of multiple animals from the residence.
The swift and decisive actions taken by Mr. Holly undoubtedly prevented serious injury or loss of life. His courage, compassion, and willingness to act in a dangerous situation exemplify the highest standards of community service.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Ricky Holly for his heroic efforts and commends him for setting an outstanding example for the community.
